That\u2019s the largest number of projected fatalities in that time period since 2006.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Every day about 8 people in the United States are killed in crashes<\/strong> that are reported <strong>to involve<\/strong> a <strong>distracted driver<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anything that takes your attention away from driving can be considered a distraction. Traffic safety experts classify distractions into three main types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manual:<\/strong>when you move your hands from the wheel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visual:<\/strong>when you focus your eyes away from the road.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive:<\/strong>when your mind wanders away from the task of driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few examples of common activities that can cause distracted driving include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talking or texting on the phone<\/li>\n<li>Eating and drinking<\/li>\n<li>Daydreaming<\/li>\n<li>Talking to passengers in your vehicle<\/li>\n<li>Messing with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>DEFENSIVE DRIVING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Defensive Driving is it\u2019s about thinking ahead and anticipating hazards so you can avoid accidents before they happen. You should always:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Plan Ahead:<\/u> Check weather conditions before you leave. Give yourself enough time to make the trip. When possible stick to a lane with a shoulder next to it, so you have somewhere to move in an emergency.<\/li>\n<li><u>Scan your Surroundings: <\/u>Avoid \u201cThat car came out of nowhere!\u201d Scan intersections before passing them. The goal is to always anticipate where vehicles will be a few seconds later so you can respond quickly.<\/li>\n<li><u>Brake Early: <\/u>Leave extra space between you and other cars. Slow down sooner. There is no good reason to tailgate anyone (this is not debatable \ud83d\ude0a).<\/li>\n<li><u>Remain calm: <\/u>Don\u2019t be aggressive. Not only will this irritate drivers around you, it is also highly dangerous. Studies have shown that aggressive driving causes more accidents rather than prevents them.
